If you have a tough time believing that a self-organizing group of volunteers can create value, look at this narrated time-lapse screenshow of Wikipedia's definition of Heavy Metal Umlaut.
I particularly like the screenshow form because there's no translation between the viewer and the application. All too many training programs assume it's helpful to oversimplify reality. "First we put the name in the name box...." It's far better to show the real deal and let the learner take in as much or as little as necessary.
