"When God gives you lemons, make lemonade."
People who attended the early meetings of eLearning Forum may remember a fellow from SRI named Michael Chorost who attended a number of sessions. I remember sitting in the office of Gary Bridges at SRI several years back and hearing the news that Mike had gone stone deaf. Not a career-enhancing move for an SRI consultant, doctorate or no.
Mike's book just came out, and it looks like it will be a winner. Here's what Mike has to say in his blog:

Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human (Houghton Mifflin, June 2005) is my story of becoming a cyborg. It’s a scientific memoir of going deaf and getting my hearing back with a cochlear implant, that is, a computer embedded in my skull. Science fiction writers and filmmakers have speculated about cyborgs (human-computer fusions) for decades, but in this book I reveal what it’s really like to have part of one’s body controlled by a computer. You can read a chapter of Rebuilt at Amazon. It's good stuff. Way to go, Mike!
